When I gave birth to my baby girls, I had no idea the powerful force of emotions that they would bring into our home as they grew into womanhood.
They’re just babies, little girls with tutus and their sweetness seemed to be a daily dose of smiles and joy to our home.
And then they began to grow into young women, with hairstyles, food preferences, concern over their friends
and their school studies and their emotions are becoming a very real part of every conversation.
Emotions run high in a home full of women. Young women, older women, a generation of emotional women, learning to live together and love well.
Some conversations I will remember forever. Perhaps it is because I find myself repeating some of the same life lessons to my girls or maybe it is because I am speaking to myself?
The day we spent over an hour with pitched voices in the middle of the kitchen rehashing the same thing until we were hoarse, in tears and utterly exhausted over matters of the heart.
Sometimes, we allow our emotions to dictate our future. My girl was changing her plans for her future weekly, feeling the pressure of life.
I could see her living off of the peaks of happiness and floundering from the valleys. There was no middle ground. No daily living life like everyone else, because emotions were ruling supreme and causing doubt and decisions to become muddled.
Emotions are a powerful thing and we all need a little levity when it comes to our future. It seems daunting enough..the daily decisions and the big choices that are in front of us.
Remember when you were younger and you felt as if you needed to make the decision of a lifetime in one year? What will you do with the rest of your life?
Bringing emotions into check and coming back to earth where God dwells with men and we have His guidance, the girls and I made a conscience choice to pray about what we will do with our tomorrow.
God has it all under control. Can we give him our emotions too?
We tend to hold onto our reactions like rights and our feelings with a fight.
Raising daughters that understand the difference between their emotional up’s and downs and the truth of the Gospel applied to their life is a challenge of its own. We need to learn this ourselves.
We may be allowing our emotions to mask the real word and the real path that God has already laid out for us.
We allow fear, uncertainty, pride, anger or frustration to hide the purpose in the moment and draw us away from trusting God to walk us day by day through any thing that may come our way.
Emotions are so real and powerful. They are unpredictable and controlling.
May we raise daughters that can discern truth in the middle of the peaks and valleys, drawing on God’s strength and love to get them through.
One day at a time. Don’t worry about the future or you may miss the gifts of today.
I love the beautiful gift of emotion that God has given to each of my girls and in so many different ways. We daily remind one another that sometimes our up’s and down’s can be out of control and we need to reign in the power of our responses or reactions to see everything clearly.

Last week at a speaking event, I talked about this very subject. It’s okay to feel as long as we don’t let our emotions dictate truth. We need to be led by the gospel, which is truth, rather than by our emotions. This is a great article, September!
Thank you, September. So on point.
I have five daughters and our house is an emotional soup at times. Teaching our girls to recognize truth during the peaks and valleys is challenging as we ourselves struggle to hang on to what we know. I’m so thankful that God is unchanging and that He loves us.
